In its developmental stage for years, Tonle Sab’s typeface is a now a distinct font, with regards to both the individual characters and the overall image. They are suitable for designers, who want a soft spot, inclement edged look and love new faces. Corporations have incorporated Tom Tor’s custom made typefaces as part of their visual identities system and now Tonle Sab is available in Light, Light Italic and Bold versions.

I was commissioned by United Cambodia, to come up with a poster, which expressed a new look and feel for the 2008 Khmer New Year’s festival. One of the most challenging things was to redesign their corporate identity and media kit. As you can see, I used the letters of the alphabet combining different layers and colors that explained and captured the fresh new beginnings of spring. This poster was used mainly for advertising and promotional purposes.

Introducing: The WaMu Gift Account Interactive The account holder opens a secure WaMu Gift Account online. Using an easy-to-customize WaMu template, he or she sends out a secure email or prints out an informational card that can be snail mailed in an envelope (say for example, along with a baby shower or wedding invitation) stating the account is “open” with easy-to-follow instructions on how to deposit into the account. It’s important to remember that anyone can deposit into the account, but only the named recipient(s) can withdraw from it. Then the gift giver just hops online, use a credit card or transfers funds from a checking account, and voila! The cash gift is in the recipient’s account.

In conjunction with Design Tide in Tokyo, I was invited to create a motion trailer called the Tide MOVIE project. Based on this year’s main theme “PLAY”, I aka Eskimo along with a handful of leading designers in the industry was given the challenge of producing an animation that interprets our own unique form of the meaning “PLAY”. The main site and a grand total of about 50 extension sites, including interior shops and galleries in Aoyama, Harajuku, Shibuya, and Roppongi areas displayed our works. The trailer was also featured on Shibuya-109 TV billboard, Harajuku-PARCO TV billboard, Roppongi-Hills TV billboard, and Tokyo Midtown TV billboard.

I just want to take this time to say, “Thank you and I appreciated all the people who attended my exhibition in Roppongi, Tokyo. It was my pleasure meeting all of you at the exhibition opening and a special thanks to Junji Suzuki.” Also, I want to let everybody know that the exhibition will be extended to November 23rd. Immediately after making a speech in front of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland about TT’s poster that celebrated the indigenous peoples, the UN approached Tom Tor with another project. It focused on something close to Tom’s heart, saving Angkor Wat, a historical ruin in his native born country of Cambodia.
At that time, the UN was organizing a fund-raiser in Europe to collect enough money to restore Angkor Wat. The poster’s goal was to target the most difficult to please, the European elite. It was an enormous challenge since they were influenced by the great Swiss grid design, moved by European modern architecture, and appreciated the classical works of typography. The sunset at Angkor Wat served in part as the inspiration, along with Angkor Wat’s three major towers that are most prominent, in which the tallest one was also incorporated into the logotype.
Today Angkor Wat is in the process of being restored. The message of the poster reached countries all over the world. A greater awareness and understanding was conveyed in this project. Henceforth, many countries were moved and immediately asked to join in the effort to restore this significant symbol of Cambodia. With this prize-winning poster, a piece of history will be able to stand once again.

Title: TomTor ’s “Everything Is More Complicated Then Visible”, is one of my personal book projects. Copies of this limited edition were printed and screen-printed. It was a difficult project for me because I had to learn bookbinding for the first time and believe me; it is not so easy as it looks. Although it appeared seemingly comprehensible, I was faced with one of the most complex and time consuming challenges of bookmaking, but it was great for me and I liked how it turned out. All I really needed was a little bit of patience. If you are interested and would like to purchase the book, please contact me for more info.

Khmer is a unique typeface in many ways. This typeface was influenced from the Khmer alphabet’s lowercase in which I have tried to be very playful with the typographic treatments that can be produced using a large selection of alternate characters with the feeling of Sanskrit letters. If you like more information about these fonts, please contact me at hello@tomtor.com or click to download on Khmer font for free. Khmer font also comes with Khmer regular, Khmer round bold and Khmer italic, giving endless possibilities to play with for each designer. Please enjoy and your comments are welcomed..

Peace is disarming is an organization dedicated to supporting world peace by mending the destructive remnants of war. We subsidize and organize non-profit and for-profit groups that work to this end. Whether it’s rebuilding a road, disarming a bomb, or rehabilitating a child soldier, it doesn’t matter; we are helping to build rather than destroy.
